# Backup Policy Overview

With backup policies, you choose which resources Eon backs up, how long to retain the backups, and where to store the snapshots.
Backup policies also enable security monitoring by determining which resources are monitored for ransomware detection.

This article explains the basics of backup policies and introduces the four types of backup policies in Eon.

Backup policies are closely related to vaults.
[Vaults] are the storage locations where Eon stores snapshots.
You specify a vault to store the snapshots in when you create a backup policy.

Eon backs up only the resources assigned to a backup policy.
In other words, if you never create a backup policy, Eon never backs up your resources.

Additionally, resources must be backed up by Eon to be eligible for [ransomware detection].
When you assign a backup policy to ransomware detection, all resources covered by that policy are automatically monitored for ransomware indicators.

You can add [labels] to backup policies to filter the **Backup policies** list.

## Backup policy types

Eon has a backup policy type for cloud workloads and one for each supported SaaS application.
This table shows what each type backs up and the options each policy has:

## Backup policy labels

You can apply labels to your backup policies to allow you to filter them.
This can be helpful in accounts with a large number of backup policies.

Labels apply to every type of backup policy, for both cloud workloads and SaaS applications.

Labels don't change how a policy behaves.
They have no effect on which resources a policy covers, how Eon backs them up, or who has access to the policy.

Each policy card shows its labels in a collapsed **Labels** section.
