# Create Microsoft 365 Backup Policies

A Microsoft 365 backup policy protects a tenant's Exchange mailboxes, OneDrive accounts, SharePoint sites, and Teams channel messages on a fixed daily schedule.

This article explains how to create a Microsoft 365 backup policy in the Eon console.

## Create a Microsoft 365 backup policy

You can create a Microsoft 365 backup policy from the

Backup Policies

page in the Eon console.
To get started, click **Create Backup Policy**.

#### Before you start

Before you create a Microsoft 365 backup policy, make sure you've connected the tenant you want to back up.
See [Microsoft 365: Connect Source Tenants].

[Microsoft 365: Connect Source Tenants]: /data-protection/saas-workloads/microsoft-365/connections/connect-source-tenants

#### Name the policy

Provide a **Name** for the backup policy.

#### Choose the backup policy type

For **Backup source**, choose **SaaS application**.

In **Apply policy to**, choose **Microsoft 365**.
For more information on what a Microsoft 365 backup policy includes, see [About Microsoft 365 Backup Policies].

[About Microsoft 365 Backup Policies]: /data-protection/backup-and-protection/backup-configuration/backup-policies/microsoft-365/about-microsoft-365-backup-policies

> **Note**
>
> These settings can't be changed after you continue.

Click **Continue**.

#### Choose the tenant

In **Resource selection**, choose the Microsoft 365 tenant you want to back up.
Only tenants connected as a Microsoft 365 source tenant appear in the list, and each tenant can be assigned to only one Microsoft 365 backup policy.

The footer of this step shows the policy name and labels.
Optionally, add labels to the policy to allow filtering.
You add and remove labels next to **Backup policy name**.

Click (Add label), type a label, and then press **Enter** or click .
To remove a label, click the x icon on it.

Click **Next**.

#### Choose users, SharePoint sites, and teams

In **Backup settings**, under **Users**, choose whose Exchange mailbox and OneDrive account to back up:

* **Back up all users**: All current users are included, and new users are included automatically as they're discovered.

* **Back up specific users**: Search for and select the users you want to include.

* **Back up direct members of specific groups & teams**: Search for and select the groups or Microsoft Teams whose direct members you want to include.
See [Group and team selection] for information on how Eon backs up a group's members.

[Group and team selection]: /data-protection/saas-workloads/microsoft-365/microsoft-365#group-and-team-selection

Under **SharePoint Sites**, choose which sites to back up:

* **Back up all sites**: All sites are included by default.
Optionally, in **Exclude sites**, search for and select any sites you want to exclude.

* **Back up specific sites**: Search for and select the sites you want to include.

* **Don't back up sites**: No SharePoint sites are backed up.

Under **Teams**, choose whose channel messages to back up:

* **Back up all Teams**: Every team is included, and teams discovered later are included automatically.
Optionally, in **Optionally exclude Teams**, search for and select any teams you want to exclude.

* **Back up specific Teams**: Search for and select the teams you want to include.
Eon doesn't add teams discovered after you save the policy, so add each new team yourself.

* **Don't back up Teams**: No channel messages are backed up.

Channel files aren't part of the Microsoft Teams selection.
They're stored in SharePoint, so your SharePoint sites selection covers them instead.

Click **Next**.

#### Review the protection summary

In the **Protection summary** step, review the users, SharePoint sites, and teams covered by your selections, and confirm there's nothing unexpected.

If you need to make changes, click **Back** to edit your selections.

Click **Next** to continue.

#### Set the backup schedule

Microsoft 365 backup policies use a single, fixed daily schedule.

Set the **Start time**, **Retention** (or choose unlimited retention), and **Vault** to store snapshots in.

#### Save

When you're done, click **Create**.
Your policy begins backing up the tenant's assigned users, SharePoint sites, and teams according to the configuration you set.
