# Convert Non-Eon Snapshots

This article explains how to convert your non-Eon snapshots to Eon snapshots.

If you have EC2 snapshots in your source account, you can convert them to Eon snapshots.
Doing this gives you all the benefits of Eon snapshots, including search, explore, and restoring to any restore account.
You can [convert an individual snapshot] or [bulk convert a given resource's snapshots].

> **Note**
>
> Eon can't delete non-Eon snapshots, so the original snapshots remain in the source account and continue to be shown as non-Eon snapshots that can be converted.
> When you no longer need the original snapshots, you'll need to delete them yourself.
>
> Always confirm that a snapshot has been successfully converted before deleting the original snapshot.

## Find supported resources with non-Eon snapshots

To make it easier to find your non-Eon snapshots, you can filter and sort your inventory to surface the relevant resources.

To find a resource with non-Eon snapshots you can convert:

1. In your

   inventory

, filter for resources where **Resource type** is **EC2**.

2. Find the **Non-Eon snapshot count** column.
This column shows the number of non-Eon snapshots a resource has.

Click the column header to sort the resources by the number of non-Eon snapshots.

Resources higher in the column are those with more non-Eon snapshots.
If a resource doesn't have any non-Eon snapshots, **Non-Eon snapshot count** is blank.

You can now select a resource to convert its non-Eon snapshots.

## Convert a non-Eon snapshot

The steps below explain how to convert a non-Eon snapshot.
You can get started by [finding a resource with non-Eon snapshots].

When converting a non-Eon snapshot, you'll set the retention period for the new Eon snapshot.
You can choose to calculate the retention period based on the original snapshot date or from the date you convert the snapshot.

#### Before you start

Before converting a non-Eon snapshot, make sure you have a [vault] you can store the converted snapshot in.

#### Find the non-Eon snapshot you want to convert

1. In your

   inventory

, select the resource whose snapshot you want to convert.
   The **Resource Details** drawer opens.

2. Click the **Eon snapshots** tab.
You'll see a calendar view with colored dots on the days when snapshots were taken.
There can be more than one snapshot per day.

By default, non-Eon snapshots are hidden.

3. Turn **Show non-Eon snapshots** on.

The calendar is updated to indicate days with non-Eon snapshots.
The icon indicates a single non-Eon snapshot, and the icons indicates multiple non-Eon snapshots.

When you click a day, a list of snapshots taken that day is displayed below the calendar.

4. Expand the snapshot you want to convert.

5. Click **Convert to Eon**.

The **Convert to Eon snapshot** panel opens.

#### Convert

1. Under **Eon snapshot**, choose the retention period that matches your needs (for example, **14 Days**, **12 Weeks**, or **6 Months**).

2. Choose the **Calculate from** options to determine when the converted snapshot's retention period starts:

   * **Now**: The retention period starts from today.

   * **Original snapshot date**: The retention period starts from the date the non-Eon snapshot was originally taken.
If you choose this option, the retention period must be big enough that the snapshot won't have already expired.

3. Choose a vault to store the converted snapshot in.

4. Click **Convert**.

Eon creates a backup job to convert the snapshot.
When the backup job completes, the new Eon snapshot is available in your inventory.
You'll then be able to search, explore, and restore granular data from the snapshot.

If you no longer need the original snapshot, you can delete it after the conversion is complete.

## Bulk convert a resource's non-Eon snapshots

The steps below explain how to convert multiple non-Eon snapshots for a given resource.
You can get started by [finding a resource with non-Eon snapshots].

When bulk converting non-Eon snapshots, you'll set the retention period for the new Eon snapshots based on the original snapshot dates.
Eon converts only those snapshots that are within the retention period.
For example, if you set a retention period of 14 days, Eon converts only snapshots that were taken within the last 14 days.
All older snapshots are ignored.

> **Info**
>
> Eon converts up to one snapshot for each original snapshot date.
> If the resource has multiple snapshots in a given day, the last snapshot of the day is converted.

#### Before you start

Before converting non-Eon snapshots, make sure you have a [vault] you can store the converted snapshots in.

#### Find the resource whose snapshots you want to convert

1. In your

   inventory

, select the resource whose snapshots you want to convert.
   The **Resource Details** panel opens.

2. Click the **Eon snapshots** tab.
You'll see a calendar view with colored dots on the days when snapshots were taken.
There can be more than one snapshot per day.

By default, non-Eon snapshots are hidden.

A count of all the non-Eon snapshots is displayed at the bottom of the panel.

3. Without selecting a day, click **Convert to Eon**.

The **Convert to Eon snapshots** panel opens.

#### Convert

1. Under **Eon snapshot**, choose the retention period that matches your needs (for example, **14 Days**, **12 Weeks**, or **6 Months**).

Each snapshot's retention period starts from the date the non-Eon snapshot was originally taken.
The retention period must be big enough that at least one snapshot is within the retention period and won't have already expired.

2. Choose a vault to store the converted snapshots in.
All the snapshots must be stored in the same vault.

3. Click **Convert**.

Eon creates a backup job for each snapshot to be converted.
When a backup job completes, the new Eon snapshot is available in your inventory.
You'll then be able to search, explore, and restore granular data from the snapshot.

If you no longer need the original snapshots, you can delete them after the conversion is complete.
