# About Querying

This article explains the basics of querying your database snapshots in Eon.
By running SQL queries with the Eon console or with the Eon API, you can extract records from your backed-up database without waiting to restore the resource.

Eon supports querying snapshots of managed database resources, relational databases hosted on virtual machines, and noSQL databases such as DynamoDB.

## Eon queries your snapshots with Athena

When you query a database snapshot, Eon sends an Amazon Athena query on the backed-up data as if you were querying the original database directly.
Eon supports running `SELECT` SQL queries.
For a syntax reference, see [SELECT] in the Amazon Athena docs.

## Query results are saved to your restore account

When you run a query, Eon restores granular data from your snapshots.
This is similar in concept to restoring files or folders from a resource, as opposed to restoring an entire resource such as a volume or instance.

Before running your query, you'll need to choose a storage location in your restore account to save the results to.
A subset of the query results is displayed in the Eon console, while a CSV of the full results is saved to the specified storage location.
As long as you have the right permissions to the storage location, you can view or download the CSV as any other object.

You can use a single storage location for all granular restore operations,
However, when querying, the restore destination must be in the same region as the snapshot's vault, so you may need to create a storage location if one doesn't already exist in the region.
