# Manage Notification Policies for Slack

This article explains how to create notification policies that send notifications to a Slack channel.

In the steps below, you'll deploy a custom Slack app called **Eon Notifications** to your workspace.
The app contains a bot that, after installed and authorized, sends notifications to a Slack channel.

A notification policy can send notifications to a single Slack channel.
To send notifications to multiple Slack channels, you'll need to create a separate notification policy for each channel.
You can reuse the same Slack app for multiple notification policies, so you only need to install the app once.

## Create a notification policy for Slack

#### Before you start

Make sure you're allowed to install apps on your Slack workspace.
If you can't, ask your Slack workspace admin to grant permissions for you to install a custom app.

#### Launch the app creation wizard

To get started, launch Slack's app creation wizard in a new tab:

Create the Slack app

Slack's **Pick a workspace to develop your app** dialog is shown.

1. Select your company's workspace and click **Next**.
The **Review summary & create your app** dialog is shown.

2. You can optionally review the preset configurations and bot scopes in the **OAuth** and **Features** tabs, respectively.
To review the app's preset settings, click **Edit Configurations**.

3. When you're ready to continue, click **Create**.

You're redirected to the app's **Basic Information** page.

#### Install the app in your workspace

1. In the left sidebar, click **Install App**.

2. Click the **Install to** button to continue to the confirmation page.

3. Review the permissions the app requests, then click **Allow** to confirm.

The app is installed in your workspace, and you're redirected to the **Installed App Settings** page, where the **Bot User OAuth Token** is displayed.
You'll need the OAuth token in the next step, so don't close the tab yet.

#### Copy the app's auth token

In this step, you'll get the Slack app's OAuth token, which you'll use later on when configuring the notification policy in Eon.
For now, you'll paste it in a temporary location, like a text editor:

1. Open your Slack app's **Installed App Settings** page.

2. Copy the **Bot User OAuth Token**.

3. Paste the OAuth token in a temporary location.

#### Copy the target channel's ID

In this step, you'll get the Slack channel ID of the channel you want to send notifications to.
You'll use this later when configuring the notification policy in Eon.
For now, you'll paste it in a temporary location, like a text editor:

1. In your Slack workspace, choose the channel you want to send messages to, and open the channel.

2. If the channel is a private channel, your app must be added to the channel before it can send messages.
To do this, type `/app`, select **Add apps to this channel**, and select your app.

3. Click the channel title to open the channel management dialog.
Scroll to the bottom of the dialog until you see the **Channel ID**, and copy the channel ID.

![Channel ID is at the bottom of the channel management dialog](/_fern-img/d20c782a41eedc52334424115b4c6e186baa86291a414e0d6128df970d037ad3.webp)

4. Paste the channel ID in a temporary location.

#### Create the notification policy in Eon

In this step, you'll use the app's auth token and target channel ID from the previous two steps.
Log in to your Eon project to complete this step:

1. In your project's

   Notification Policies

page in the Eon console, click ** Create Notification Policy**.
The **Create a Notification Policy** wizard opens.

2. Enter a **Notification policy name** that describes the channel notifications will be sent to.

3. Choose the **Slack** notification channel type, then click **Next**.

4. Using the values you copied earlier from [Copy the app's auth token] and [Copy the target channel's ID], paste the **Channel ID** and **Bot user OAuth token**, respectively.

[Copy the app's auth token]: #copy-the-apps-auth-token

[Copy the target channel's ID]: #copy-the-target-channels-id

5. Click **Next** to continue.

#### Choose the notifications to send

1. Pick the notifications you want to subscribe the channel to.

2. Optionally, set event conditions to filter which events trigger notifications:

To filter notifications to specific events, turn **Apply event conditions** on.
With conditions turned on, you'll receive notifications only for events that match the conditions you set.

To leave **Apply event conditions** off, you'll receive notifications for all events of the selected types.

When you turn **Apply event conditions** on, click **Set Condition** to choose the event properties you want to filter by.
You can filter by vaults, backup policies, resources, or source accounts.

You can set a simple **AND** or **OR** list of conditions, or you can group conditions for fine-tuned event filtering.

   #### See how to work with conditions and groups

   #### Work with conditions

   * To add a condition: Click (Add condition), then select the property, operator, and value for the condition.

   * To add a condition within a group: Click the large (Add condition) button in the group, or select (Add condition) > **Add condition** > **Above** or **Below**.
Then select the property, operator, and value for the condition.

   * To delete a condition: Click the condition's (Actions) menu, then click **Delete condition**.

For each condition, set the property, operator, and value.

   #### Work with groups

   * To nest an existing condition or group in a group: In an existing condition or group, click (Actions) > **Create group**.
Select the group's logical **AND** or **OR** operator.

   * To delete a group and all the conditions it contains: Click the group's (Actions) menu, then click **Delete group**.

3. When you're done, click **Test and Create**.

Eon sends a test notification to the channel to confirm the connection.

If the test succeeds, the notification policy is created.

If the test fails, it means either the OAuth token or channel ID is incorrect, or that the app doesn't have the necessary permissions to send messages to the channel.
Try again after checking the app's scopes, OAuth token, and channel ID, and confirm the app is installed on the correct channel.

Your notification policy is now set up, and you'll receive notifications of the subscribed events in your Slack channel.
