# S3: Restore a Bucket

This article explains how to restore an Amazon S3 bucket from your Eon snapshots.

If the bucket has saved restore settings in a restore template, you can [restore the bucket from a restore template](#restore-the-bucket-from-a-restore-template) instead of entering the destination in the wizard.

## Restore an S3 bucket

#### Before you start

Before you restore a bucket, make sure:

[restore account has been connected]: /data-protection/restoring/restore-accounts/about-restore-accounts

* A [restore account has been connected] to your Eon account.

* The AWS restore account contains a bucket in the same region as the vault you're restoring from.

#### Find the snapshot you want to restore

1. In your

   inventory

, select the S3 bucket you want to restore.
   The Resource Details panel opens.

2. Click the **Eon snapshots** tab.
You'll see a calendar view with colored dots on the days when snapshots were taken.
There can be more than one snapshot per day.

When you click a day, a list of Eon snapshots taken that day is displayed below the calendar.

3. When you find the snapshot you want to restore, click **Restore**.
If a menu opens, click **Manual restore**.
   The Restore S3 panel opens.

#### Choose the restore account

In the Restore S3 wizard, you're taken through a two-step process.
The first step is to choose a restore account.

Choose the cloud account you want to restore the bucket to, and then click **Next**.

#### Set the restored bucket and prefix details

In the *Configuration* step, you'll set the restored data details.

1. Enter the destination **Bucket name** you want the object restored to.
The bucket needs to exist already, and it needs to have a bucket policy that grants write access to Eon.
It doesn't need to be empty.

2. Optionally, you can provide a **Bucket prefix** if you want to restore the object to a specific location in the bucket.
If you don't provide a prefix, the object is restored to the bucket root.

   > **Warning**
   >
   > If there are naming conflicts with existing objects, Eon overwrites the existing data.
   > Use a unique prefix to avoid overwrites.

3. Click **Start** to start the asynchronous restore job.

#### Monitor the restore job

You can see your list of restore jobs on the

Restore jobs tab

in the Jobs page.

After the job is completed, the status changes to **SUCCESS**, and you can work with the restored data as normal.

## Restore the bucket from a restore template

A restore template saves the destination account, region, bucket, and prefix for an S3 bucket restore.

Restoring from a template takes you straight to the restore, because the template already supplies the settings the wizard's configuration steps ask for.
Eon fills in the template's prefix placeholders for this bucket and snapshot, and [validates the template](/data-protection/restoring/restore-templates/about-restore-templates#template-validation) before the restore starts.

#### Before you start

Before you restore a bucket from a restore template, make sure:

* A restore template for S3 buckets exists in your project.
To create one, and to attach it to the bucket, see [Manage Restore Templates].

* The template's destination [restore account has been connected] to your Eon account.

3. When you find the snapshot you want to restore, click **Restore**, and then click **Restore using template**.
The **S3 bucket restore** panel opens.

#### Choose the template

In **Restore template**, the bucket's [attached template](/data-protection/restoring/restore-templates/about-restore-templates) is already selected.
To restore with a different template, select any other S3 bucket template.

#### Review the template validation and parameters

Eon validates the template against this bucket and the template's destination account.
If the template passes, the panel shows "Template is valid."
If it fails, the panel shows "Template is invalid." and lists each failing setting with the reason and a suggested fix.

To continue, select a different template, or fix this one on the

Restore templates

page.

Under **Evaluated parameters**, review where the objects are restored to, with the template's placeholders already filled in for the bucket and snapshot.

> **Warning**
>
> If there are naming conflicts with existing objects, Eon overwrites the existing data.
> Use a unique prefix to avoid overwrites.

#### Start the restore job

Click **Restore**.

You can see your list of restore jobs on the

Restore jobs tab

in the Jobs page.

After the job is completed, the restored objects are in the template's destination bucket, under the prefix shown in the evaluated parameters.
