# Microsoft 365: Restore OneDrive Data

Restoring from Eon puts a user's lost files, folders, or whole OneDrive account back in their own OneDrive.
You recover the one deleted file, or everything the account held when the snapshot was taken.

This article explains how to restore Microsoft 365 OneDrive data from your Eon snapshots.

OneDrive data always restores to its original user, in the tenant it was backed up from.
You can't redirect it to a different OneDrive account or a different tenant.

## Restore OneDrive files and folders

Restoring an item puts it back in the user's own OneDrive, either over the existing copy or into a new folder.

#### Before you start

Before you restore OneDrive files or folders, make sure:

* You have the **Restore files** permission (`saas_user_drive.restore`).

* A [Microsoft 365 restore tenant] is connected for the tenant the OneDrive account was backed up from.

> **Warning**
>
> Check **Restore Mode** before you start.
> For a single file, Eon preselects **Override existing content**, which replaces the copy in the user's OneDrive.

#### Select the snapshot and the file or folder to restore

1. In your

   SaaS inventory

, open the Microsoft 365 tenant the OneDrive account was backed up from.

2. Navigate to **Users** in the side menu, select the user whose OneDrive you want to restore from, and then click **OneDrive**.

3. Eon preselects the newest snapshot that captured the user.
To browse a different one, click the snapshot date.
You'll see a calendar view with colored dots on the days when snapshots were taken.
There can be more than one snapshot per day.

When you click a day, a list of Eon snapshots taken that day is displayed below the calendar.

4. Select the snapshot you want to restore.

5. Browse or search for the file or folder you want to restore, hover over its row, and then click the restore icon.

#### Choose the restore tenant

Choose the Microsoft 365 restore tenant you want to restore to.

Only the tenant the OneDrive account was backed up from is available.

#### Choose the restore mode

Set **Restore Mode**:

* **Override existing content**: Eon writes the item back to its original location, replacing what's there.
This is available for files only, and the control is turned off when you're restoring a folder.

* **Restore to a new folder**: Eon creates a folder and restores into it.
  Enter a **Folder name**.
A folder name can't contain `"`, `*`, `:`, `<`, `>`, `?`, `\`, or `|`, and no part of it can start or end with a space or end with a period.

A folder restore brings back the folder's nested subfolders along with it, including ones that were empty in the snapshot.
Eon restores the folder under its own name, without the path above it, so restoring `Plans/Q3` into a new folder named `Recovery` puts it at `Recovery/Q3`.
A single file lands directly in the new folder you named.

#### Start the job and monitor it

Click **Restore**, then track the job from **View job**, or from the

Restore jobs tab

on the Jobs page.

When the job completes, the item is back in the user's OneDrive, at its original location or in the new folder you named.

## Restore a OneDrive account

Restoring a whole OneDrive account puts every file in the snapshot back at its original location in the user's own OneDrive.
Eon writes those files over anything at the same path, but it never deletes, so a file created after the snapshot is left alone and the account ends up holding both.

> **Warning**
>
> Restoring a whole OneDrive account overwrites the user's files at their original locations, and there's no opt-out.
> The **Restore Mode** choice exists only on item-level restores.
> To keep the current files, restore the items you need individually into a new folder instead.

#### Before you start

Before you restore a OneDrive account, make sure:

* You have the **Restore users** permission (`saas_user.restore`).

* A [Microsoft 365 restore tenant] is connected for the tenant the OneDrive account was backed up from.

* You've confirmed that overwriting the OneDrive account's current contents is what you want.

#### Select the snapshot and the OneDrive account to restore

1. In your

   SaaS inventory

, open the Microsoft 365 tenant the OneDrive account was backed up from.

2. Navigate to **Users** in the side menu, and then select the user whose OneDrive account you want to restore.

5. Click **Restore OneDrive**.

#### Choose the restore tenant

Choose the Microsoft 365 restore tenant you want to restore to.

Only the tenant the OneDrive account was backed up from is available.

#### Start the job and monitor it

Click **Restore**, then track the job from **View job**, or from the

Restore jobs tab

on the Jobs page.

When the job completes, the OneDrive account holds the files from the snapshot at their original paths.
An item that had its own sharing permissions gets them back, and an item that inherited its permissions takes the permissions of the folder it's restored into.
Sharing links aren't restored.
