Bulk Restore Resources

Who can use this feature

Anyone with these permissions: Restore resources, View restore templates

A bulk restore brings a whole group of resources back in one pass, without running the restore wizard once for each resource. You choose snapshots for the whole group with one rule, validate every resource at once, and start all the restore jobs together. Each resource restores with the settings in its restore template, which you set up and Eon validated before the incident, so there’s nothing to configure while you recover.

This article explains how to restore many resources in one bulk restore, each from its own snapshot and restore template.

Bulk restore supports EC2 instances and S3 buckets. One batch can mix both types, and the bulk restore panel lists each type in its own group.

Bulk restore resources

You start a bulk restore from your Inventory in the Eon console.

Before you start

Before you bulk restore resources, make sure:

  • Each resource has a restore template attached, or a template of its type exists for you to pick in the panel for this batch. To create and attach one, see Manage Restore Templates.

  • Each template’s destination restore account is connected to Eon. For details, see About Restore Accounts.

  • Your role lets you restore to each template’s destination account. A role can limit the destination accounts you restore to, by account or by account tag, and whether you can restore to an account other than the source account.

  • For S3 buckets, you know where each bucket restores to. Check each template’s Target bucket and Prefix template on the Restore templates page. A prefix’s placeholders are filled in separately for each bucket, as described in Restore Template Placeholders.

1

Select the resources

  1. In your Inventory, select the resources you want to restore.

  2. Click Actions, and then click Bulk restore. The Restore multiple resources panel opens, with your resources grouped by type, such as an EC2 group and an S3 group.

To restore one type separately instead, open its group’s (Actions) menu and click Remove group.

2

Set the snapshot selection

When the panel opens, each row starts with a recent snapshot of the resource, when one exists. To choose snapshots for the whole batch with one rule:

  1. Click Update Snapshot Selection…. The Update snapshot selection dialog opens.

  2. Set the rule to apply the latest or oldest snapshot created in the time range you need.

  3. To restore only from snapshots without threat findings, select Skip snapshots with threat findings.

  4. Click Update snapshot selection.

A resource with no matching snapshot in the range is left with an empty snapshot cell. A snapshot with threat findings is marked with an icon that reads “This snapshot contains threat findings” when you hover over it.

3

Adjust individual resources

Each row starts with the resource’s attached restore template. In each group, override the rows that need something different:

  • To change the snapshot for a resource, select a different one in its row.

  • To restore a resource with a different template, select it in the row’s template cell.

  • To use one template for every resource in a group, open the group’s (Actions) menu, point to Apply template to group, and click the template.

A template you choose in this panel applies to this batch only. It doesn’t change the template attached to the resource.

4

Check each resource's status

Once a row has both a snapshot and a template, Eon validates the resource, including its template, and shows its status. Hover over a row’s status to see why the row can’t be restored.

To fix a row, change its snapshot or template, and Eon validates it again. To leave a resource out of the batch, click (Actions) in its row, and then click Remove from restore.

Restore stays disabled until every row passes validation.

5

Start the restore

Click Restore to start restoring resources.

6

Follow the restore jobs

When the bulk restore starts, the console shows a confirmation with a link to view the restore jobs. Click View jobs to open the Restore jobs list filtered to this bulk restore.

Each resource restores as its own restore job, and all the jobs belong to the same bulk-restore operation. Once a job completes, its resource is restored to the destination its template sets.

If there are naming conflicts with existing objects, Eon overwrites the existing data. Use a unique prefix to avoid overwrites.

To keep each restore separate, use a Prefix template that includes {restore_datetime}, so every restore writes under its own prefix.

Next steps

  • Follow the jobs: In the Restore jobs list, the Bulk restore — N done, M failed of T chip filters the list to this bulk restore and tracks its progress. To see every restore job again, remove the chip.

  • Cancel a restore: To stop one resource’s restore, open its job and click Cancel job. The other jobs in the bulk restore keep running.

  • Get approval: If an action approval rule covers restores, Eon creates one action request for the whole batch instead of starting the jobs. For how action requests work, see About Action Approvals.
