Microsoft 365: Restore SharePoint Data
Who can use this feature
Anyone with these permissions: Restore shared drives
Restoring from Eon brings back a SharePoint file or folder, including content that Microsoft’s retention no longer holds. You recover the one contract or the whole project folder from a snapshot.
This article explains how to restore Microsoft 365 SharePoint files and folders from your Eon snapshots.
SharePoint data always restores to the tenant it was backed up from. You can’t redirect it to a different tenant. A site’s document libraries sit in its file list, and you browse into one like any other folder. Despite its name, the Restore shared drives permission is the one that covers SharePoint document libraries.
Restore a file
Restoring a file puts it back in the document library it came from, either over the existing copy or into a new folder.
Before you start
Before you restore a file, make sure:
- A Microsoft 365 restore tenant is connected for the tenant the SharePoint site was backed up from.
Check Restore Mode before you start. For a file, Eon preselects Override existing content, which replaces the copy at the file’s original path.
Select the snapshot and the file to restore
-
In your SaaS inventory, open the Microsoft 365 tenant the SharePoint site was backed up from.
-
Navigate to SharePoint in the side menu, and then select the site that holds the file.
-
Eon preselects the newest snapshot that captured the site. To browse a different one, click the snapshot date. You’ll see a calendar view with colored dots on the days when snapshots were taken. There can be more than one snapshot per day.
When you click a day, a list of Eon snapshots taken that day is displayed below the calendar.
-
Select the snapshot you want to restore.
-
Browse or search for the file you want to restore, hover over its row, and then click the restore icon.
Choose the restore tenant
Choose the Microsoft 365 restore tenant you want to restore to.
Only the tenant the SharePoint site was backed up from is available.
Choose the restore mode
Set Restore Mode:
-
Override existing content: Eon writes the file back to its original path, replacing what’s there. Eon recreates the file there even if it was deleted from the library.
-
Restore to a new folder: Eon creates a folder and restores the file into it, leaving the original untouched. Enter a Folder name. Eon suggests
Eon Restore YYYY-MM-DDTHH.mm.ssZ, with the current date and time. A folder name can’t contain",*,:,<,>,?,\, or|, and no part of it can start or end with a space or end with a period.
Start the job and monitor it
Click Restore, then track the job from View job, or from the Restore jobs tab on the Jobs page.
When the job completes, the file is back in the document library, either at its original path or directly in the new folder you named.

Name the destination folder
Enter a Folder name.
Eon suggests Eon Restore YYYY-MM-DDTHH.mm.ssZ, with the current date and time.
A folder name can’t contain ", *, :, <, >, ?, \, or |, and no part of it can start or end with a space or end with a period.
Eon restores the folder inside it under the folder’s own name, without the path above it.
Override existing content isn’t available for a folder, and shows Not available for folders. If a folder with the name you enter already exists, Eon adds the restored files to it, and replaces any file in it that has the same name.
Start the job and monitor it
Click Restore, then track the job from View job, or from the Restore jobs tab on the Jobs page.
When the job completes, the folder and the files in it are in the new folder you named.
