Microsoft 365: Restore Exchange Data
Who can use this feature
Anyone with these permissions: Restore emails, Restore users
Restoring from Eon recovers an email into a folder you choose, or a mailbox into a new folder, in the user’s own mailbox, without replacing the mail that’s already there. That recovers the one message a legal hold, an audit, or a customer dispute turns on, and the years of context in a mailbox that was emptied.
This article explains how to restore Microsoft 365 Exchange data from your Eon snapshots.
To protect sensitive information from unauthorized access, mail can’t be restored to a different mailbox or a different tenant.
Restore an email
Restoring an email imports a single message into a folder in the user’s own mailbox.
Before you start
Before you restore an email, make sure:
-
You have the Restore emails permission (
saas_mail.restore). -
A Microsoft 365 restore tenant is connected for the tenant the mailbox was backed up from.
Select the snapshot and the message to restore
-
In your SaaS inventory, open the Microsoft 365 tenant the mailbox was backed up from.
-
Navigate to Users in the side menu, select the user whose mailbox you want to restore from, and then click Exchange.
-
Click the snapshot date. You’ll see a calendar view with colored dots on the days when snapshots were taken. There can be more than one snapshot per day.
When you click a day, a list of Eon snapshots taken that day is displayed below the calendar.
-
Select the snapshot you want to restore.
-
Browse or search for the message you want to restore, and then click Restore message.
Choose the restore tenant
Choose the Microsoft 365 restore tenant you want to restore to.
Only the tenant the mailbox was backed up from is available.
Choose the destination folder
Set the Destination mail folder.
Eon suggests Eon Restore YYYY-MM-DDTHH.mm.ssZ, with the current date and time.
Eon recreates the message’s original mail-folder path beneath the folder you choose, so a message backed up from Inbox/Projects is restored to <destination>/Inbox/Projects.
Exchange system folders are protected and aren’t available as restore destinations.
Start the job and monitor it
Click Restore, then track the job from View job, or from the Restore jobs tab on the Jobs page.
When the job completes, the message is in the destination folder in the user’s mailbox, and you can tell them where to find it.
Restore a mailbox
Restoring a mailbox imports every message in the snapshot back into the user’s own mailbox. A mailbox restore covers mail only, because Eon doesn’t back up calendar items, contacts, or archive-mailbox content.
Before you start
Before you restore a mailbox, make sure:
-
You have the Restore users permission (
saas_user.restore). -
A Microsoft 365 restore tenant is connected for the tenant the mailbox was backed up from.
-
You’ve checked whether a previous restore of the same mailbox already ran. Mail imports as new, and Eon doesn’t merge it with mail that’s already there, so running the same restore twice leaves the user with two copies of every message.
Select the snapshot and the mailbox to restore

Eon imports the mail into a new folder in the user’s mailbox, named Eon Restore YYYY-MM-DDTHH.mm.ssZ with the current date and time, preserving the original folder structure beneath it.
Nothing already in the mailbox is overwritten or removed.
