Manage Restore Templates
Who can use this feature
Anyone with these permissions: Manage restore templates
A template you create and attach ahead of time is a restore you don’t have to configure during an incident, with settings Eon has already validated against the destination account. Once your critical resources each have a valid template, you can restore any of them in a few clicks, or restore many at once with a bulk restore. Because subnets, security groups, and buckets in a restore account can change after you save a template, keep each template valid so it’s ready when you need it.
This article explains how to create, edit, and delete restore templates, and how to attach them to EC2 instances and S3 buckets.
To learn what a template saves and how Eon validates it, see About Restore Templates.
Create a restore template
You can create restore templates from the Restore templates page in the Eon console.
Before you start
Before you create a restore template, make sure:
-
The destination restore account is connected to Eon.
-
For an EC2 instance template, the subnet and security groups you want to use exist in the restore account.
-
For an S3 bucket template, the destination bucket exists in the restore account, in the region you want to restore to.
-
If you want to encrypt with your own key, the KMS key exists in the restore account, in the same region.
Set the basic information
-
Click Create Restore Template.
-
Enter a Name for the template. Template names must be unique within the project. You can also add an optional Description to help teammates understand the template’s purpose.
-
Under Restore type, select EC2 Instance or S3 Bucket.
-
Click Next.
Set the configuration
In the Configuration step, set the restore settings for the template’s resource type.
For EC2 instances
-
Choose the Region, VPC, and Subnet to restore instances to.
-
Choose an Instance type, or turn Use the source instance type on to restore each instance with the type recorded in its own snapshot. With the source instance type, the subnet’s availability zone must offer each instance’s type.
-
Choose one or more Security groups to associate with the restored instances.
-
To encrypt the restored volumes with a specific KMS key, turn Encrypt restored instance on. Then select an existing key, or enter a key ARN.
-
In Naming, enter the name template for restored instances, for example
restored_{original_name}. For the placeholders you can use, see Restore Template Placeholders. -
Turn Keep original tags on to keep the tags each instance had when its snapshot was taken, or off to drop them.
-
To have each instance running as soon as its restore completes, turn Start instance after restore on.
For S3 buckets
-
Choose the Target region.
-
In Target bucket ID, enter the name of the destination bucket.
-
In Prefix template, enter the prefix to restore objects under, for example
restored/{original_name}/. For the placeholders you can use, see Restore Template Placeholders. -
To encrypt the temporary secrets that the restore uses with your own key, turn Encrypt temporary restore secrets on. Then select an existing customer-managed key, or enter a key ARN. Restored objects use the destination bucket’s default encryption either way.
The template is listed on the Restore templates page under its resource type, marked Valid or Needs attention. If it needs attention, edit it to fix the settings the template validation flags.
Attach a restore template to resources
You attach templates from your Inventory, to one resource or to many resources of the same type at once.
For a single resource:
-
In your Inventory, click the EC2 instance or S3 bucket you want to attach the template to. The resource details panel opens on the Overview tab.
-
On the Backup status or Configuration & compliance panel, click (Actions), and then click Attach Restore Template. The Attach restore template dialog opens.
-
In Restore template, select the template.
-
Click Attach.
The resource’s Restore template property shows the template’s name, and so does the Restore template column in your inventory.
For multiple resources:
-
In your Inventory, select the resources you want to attach the template to. They must all be EC2 instances or all S3 buckets.
-
Click Actions, and then click Attach restore template. The Attach restore template dialog opens.
-
In Restore template, select the template.
-
Click Attach.
The Restore template column in your inventory shows the template’s name for each resource. The resource count on the template in the Restore templates page goes up to match.
Edit a restore template
You can edit restore templates from the Restore templates page in the Eon console. Edit a template when the page marks it Needs attention, or when the resources it restores need different settings. Changes apply to every resource the template is attached to.
-
On the Restore templates page, find the template, click (Actions), and then click Edit. The Edit restore template panel opens.
-
Change the settings you need in each step.
-
Save.
Eon validates the updated template, and the page shows the new result.
Delete a restore template
You can delete restore templates from the Restore templates page in the Eon console.
Before you can delete a template, attach a different template of the same type to each resource that uses it. To find those resources, filter your Inventory by Restore template.
To delete a restore template:
-
On the Restore templates page, find the template, click (Actions), and then click Delete. A confirmation dialog opens.
-
To confirm, click Delete.
The template is removed from the Restore templates page.
